Brett Bell
Grassroots Online principal Brett Bell is a social media strategist, regular columnist and seasoned online advocate. Brett has over 15 years of practical experience in creating successful campaigns that focus on identifying, communicating and mobilizing citizens to get engaged and take action. Since founding Grassroots Online two years ago, Brett has been designing and executing online campaigns exclusively.
Since starting his own blog in 2004, Brett was an early advocate of the power of social media. Brett understood that as more individuals joined social networks and spent more time online, it is critical to develop campaign techniques to engage them directly. Brett merged his practical experience in advocacy campaign management with the rapidly evolving world of social media.
On the political side, Brett served as the Director of Online Activism for the Ontario PC Party in the recent Ontario election, where he developed, deployed and managed new activist engagement tools that were a first for Canada. Brett also writes a regular column on social media, Open Source, for the Canadian edition of Campaigns & Elections’ Politics magazine.
During the 2010 municipal election cycle, Brett launched Toronto Election News and Ottawa Election News, aggregation websites that published the latest news and gossip from the campaign trail. Leading up to election day, Brett was a regular commentator in both print and on television on social media and its impact at the polls.
Brett holds an honours degree in Public Administration from Carleton University and successfully completed the joint Harvard University-MIT program, “How To Deal With An Angry Public”, in 2008.
